Born in Cuba and nationalized spanish. He graduated from the University of Havana as a Nuclear Physicist and immediately became interested in biomedicine. He obtained his PhD in Pharmacy from the Universidad Complutense and made several stays in important research centers in Germany, United States and United Kingdom. For 25 years it has focused on the study of human defences in pathological situations such as cáncer, metastasis and infectious diseases. It has made important contributions in these areas, which have been published in high-impact scientific journals. He has combined his scientific work with management, first as Coordinator of the Project Commissions of the Health Research Fund (FIS) in the areas of Cancer, HIV and infectious diseases, and then as Scientific Director of the Health Research Institute of the Hospital Universitario La PAZ.  He shares his opinion on his personal blog “Viernes”, on the opinion space "Doble Hélice" in Redacción Médica and the English cultural magazine Bachtrack. He has won the prize for the 100 best ideas from Diario Médico (2005), he Alan Turing International Award for Innovation (2017) and Reflexiones´s Award (2018). Recently he published the popular science book ¿Qué es el cáncer?.
